Deck department is responsible for all types of navigating activities of the ship. Every ship has a Captain or Master who is in charge of the ship. He is responsible for the navigation, discipline and the safety of the passengers, crew and cargo. He must ensure the observance of national and international codes of conduct guiding sea transportation. The captain of the ship is further assisted by first mate, second mate and third mates. The First Mate oversees cargo planning, assists with navigation, allocates duties to Deck Cadets and crew and maintains discipline and order. The Second Mate, assistant to the First Mate is in-charge of checking all mails and keeping the navigational equipment and charts in good condition and also assists in navigational watches at sea and cargo watches at port. The Third Mate is responsible for keeping the safety equipment -- lifeboats, firefighting apparatus, signaling equipment etc -- in proper condition. He acts as a signal officer and assists with cargo work.

Duration :- 12 MonthsOn the successful completion of this training the trainees can join as a Nautical Trainee Cadet On Board a ship (Indian / Foregin Shipping Companies). After Passing, they will be joining as navigational / watch keeping officer as second mate on board a ship. With further Sea Service, they will be Promoted to Chief Officer and then Master / Captain of the ship.

CAREER AS A DECK OFFICER IN MERCHANT NAVY A Deck Officer starts his career as a Deck Cadet. During the pre-sea training, he will prepared for the Nautical disciplines and will be responsible for the Navigation, Cargo handling maintenance and other associated duties on board merchant navy ships. After specified periods of intervening sea service on Board a ship, cadet can progress to the rank of Captain. The career in Merchant Navy as Deck Officer is very rewarding both financially and also in job satisfaction, an opportunity to see the world. Meet different people enabling to broaden the horizons and totally free. PRESEA COURSE The training provides a 10+2 pass students to become a qualified Deck Officer. On selection you will go 3 ½ months residential Pre-sea training at Avalon Maritime Training Centre, Chandigarh. At Avalon Maritime training institute apart from the academies you will undergo practical training in seaman ship, Navigation, Cargo, Chart work, Collision, Prevention, Machine shop, Electrical shop , Hot work training and also followed by the Standard Certification and Watch keeping Training as per the STCW'95, IMO regulations. On completion of Pre-sea training of 3 ½ months you will undertake the sea phase training as a deck cadet on board ship. Deck Cadets serve on board ships, as part of the team that handles the daily operations and efficient running of the ship. Though the deck cadet assists with jobs including navigation and maintenance, the role of deck cadet is mostly of a trainee. It is the first step towards becoming a ship officer. A duty officer oversees the deck cadet at all times and takes full responsibility for the cadets work. However, it must be understood that the life of an Officer is tough, and not suited for the weak heated.Eligibility 12th PassAge Less than 25 yrs.

The one Year DNS Course is a course leading to B.Sc., Nautical Science after 18 months of sea service and also leading to 3 officer Mate Foreign going Certificate of competency awarded AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Academy, Government of Australia) enabling the cadets to become Navigating officers on board Merchant Naval Ships anywhere in the world.
