Indications:Amoxycillin is the 4-hydroxy analogue of ampicillin, and is used in a similar variety of susceptible infections. These include actinomycosis, biliary-tract infections, bone and joint infections, bronchitis, endocarditis, gastro-enteritis (including Escherichia coli enteritis and salmonella enteritis, but not shigellosis), gonorrhoea, mouth infections, otitis media, pneumonia, spleen disorders (pneumococcal infection prophylaxis), typhoid and paratyphoid fever, and urinary-tract infections. The beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid widens amoxycillins antimicrobial spectrum and a combined preparation (co-amoxiclav) can be used when resistance to amoxycillin is prevalent, for example in respiratory-tract infections due to Haemophilus influenzae or Moraxella (Branhemella) catarrhalis, or in infections such as chancroid and melioidosis. Amoxycillin is also used in the treatment of Lyme disease.It has been given with tripotassium dicitratobismuthate and metronidazole as part of triple therapy for peptic ulcer.
