Continuous exposure to asbestos can cause problems not just to the marine life forms but also to the people aboard the ship. This is why ships with asbestos need to be recycled with far more caution. "Electronic Waste" may be defined as discarded computers, office electronic equipment, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, television sets and refrigerators. This definition includes used electronics which are destined for reuse, resale, salvage, recycling, or disposal. This e-Waste has very small shelf life and very low reuse market potential. On the other hand, these items contain highly toxic heavy metals like Ni, Cd, Hg , Pb, Chrome etc. and highly carcinogen poly chlorinated biphenyls and other toxic compounds. In order to ensure environmentally safe recovery of useful products and metals and environmentally sound treatment and disposal of harmful and non useful components, GEPIL is putting up centralized E-waste processing facility as part of its TSDF - Surat and TSDF - Haryana. The facility is targeted to collect E-waste from Institutes and corporate in the northern and western India. The facility is being developed with the technical support of IRG systems. The growth of e-waste has significant economic and social impacts. The increase of electrical and electronic products, consumption rates and higher obsolescence rate leads to higher generation of e-waste. The increasing obsolescence rate of electronic products also adds to the huge import of used electronics products. The e-waste inventory based on the obsolescence rate in India will cross 8,00,000 MT in 2012.
